Q. Last year our water pipes froze but we were lucky as none were damaged,. The pipes need to be insulated. What is the best and easiest way to insulate water pipes? A. There are a couple of methods used to wrap water pipes with insulation: 1. Using Fiberglass. This method of insulating pipes requires using fiberglass batts with about a 1 1/2" thickness, cut in to about 6" wide strips. The batts are wrapped around the water pipes overlapping each other down the length of the pipe. Once wrapped the insulation is secured with a good twine, wrapped not to tight as to compress the insulation. Compressing it can cause it to lose some of it's R-Value making it less effective.
2. Using Tubular Sleeves. These can be bought at your local home improvement store. The insulated sleeves are sold in various lengths. Measure the diameter of your pipes to find the insulated sleeve that will fit. They are installed by simply opening the slit and fitting them around the pipe. All joints should be taped using a good duct tape.
3. Important Factors. While you may be able to insulate your water pipes yourself there are some things to consider. In most homes the pipes are located in the crawl space. Sometimes its very dirty and often the pipes are located in tight areas that are difficult to get to. If they aren't insulated correctly you could face the dilemma of frozen pipes in the winter months which can be expensive to replace. Before making this decision you should contact a local insulation contractor for advice.
