How To Use Information From The Attic Insulation Guide

With proper attic insulation, you can save a lot on your energy bills. The simplest way to do it is to follow an attic insulation guide and do a thorough job. With proper attic insulation, you can reduce the heat loss in your home and help conserve energy. There are few insulation products as well as insulation installation techniques that need to be adhered to very strictly. You will need to adopt various methods to inspect the existing insulation and see what needs to be done.

Insulating the Attic above the Garage

Insulating the attic above the garage will depend on whether the garage requires heating during the winter months of cooling during summer. If there is no heat and air in the garage, there will be no use in insulating it. The attic space must also have enough ventilation and without adequate ventilation, the wood might develop molds or start rotting.

Check Ventilation

First and foremost thing to follow as per the attic insulation guide is to check for proper ventilation. Ridge vents are fine but if there are vents in the overhang, then you have to ensure that they don't get covered with insulation.

Insulation Process

The insulation must be carried all the way up to the attic. You must measure the length of the runs that lie along the floor joists and cut out the insulation just a little short of that measurement.

Now you can lay the insulation in between these floor joists. If you have heat and/or air in the garage, you can use a Batt with vapor barrier attached. But if you have no heat and/or air then you could use a Batt with no vapor barrier.

Ensure that you keep the insulation lengths away from the edges of the roof as this could trap the moisture in these areas and that may result in the rotting of wood and roof decking.

Calculating the Cost

By following the attic insulation guide and adding attic insulation, you can reduce on the wastage of energy. You can save considerable amount of money by way of reduced energy bills over a period of 5 to 6 years and this will help cover the expenses that you would incur on the cost of insulation. The type of insulation that is required will depend on the area that needs insulation.

If you already have insulation in your attic, you can find out the type of insulation and make a comparison with the industry standards. The determination of the R-value is very critical while choosing the insulation. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation and the way it works.

According to industry standards and the attic insulation guide, the R-38 is highly recommended. You could also use an online calculator to estimate costs or you could find out the cost of insulation by getting a free quote from any of the professional installers. Get multiple quotes before you decide on getting the job done.
